The Nomadic City

Planning for movement, livelihoods and belonging.

2023–2024Alxa Left Banner, Inner MongoliaIndependent academic design

A settlement and service-network study exploring pastoral life, accessibility and spatial organisation through Physarum-inspired network experiments.

01 / The question

Pastoral livelihoods involve patterns of movement that challenge a fixed model of urban settlement. The project explores how planning can respond to this way of life through the relationship between settlements, services and routes.

Pastoral settlement in Alxa Left Banner
From a pastoralist household to a network of settlements
02 / The approach

Network studies inspired by Physarum inform an exploration of connectivity. These studies are translated into land-use, circulation and spatial proposals for pastoral settlements.

Road hierarchy derived from simulated paths
Candidate settlement locations on the network
Single-centre settlement simulation
Multiple-centre settlement simulation
Simulated paths to schools, clinics, shops and homes
03 / My contribution

Independent research, network studies and spatial proposals connecting pastoral settlement patterns with service access. The proposals remain academic concepts.
